The University of Wisconsin –
Milwaukee: A historical profile
Published in 1991, this history remains the best account of UW-Milwaukee’s predecessor institutions and the early decades of one of the nation’s finest urban institutions of higher education. By 1991 UW-Milwaukee had 25,000 students, eleven schools and colleges, and offered programs through the doctoral level. But, as the authors who were all long-time faculty members and administrators show, this progress came despite bitter disputes within the University of Wisconsin system. Without the support of Milwaukee political and business leaders, the campus could not have succeeded.
